The license is no longer valid, and the names have been stricken from the game in favor of generic player numbers. Tecmo Bowl never had a full NFL license in the first place which prevented use of actual team names and logos, but Tecmo did have a deal with the NFL Playerâ€™s Association to allow for the names of the players to be used in conjunction with the teamâ€™s representative home cities. Selectable teams include : The Colts, Dolphins, Brown, Broncos, Swahawks, Raiders, Redskins, 49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Bears, and Vikings. Unfortunately, not every team/city is represented. Since Tecmo couldnâ€™t get permission to use real NFL team names, teams are instead represented by their city. The top down viewpoint gives an equal advantage to both sides because neither player has an obstructed or inferior view of the game, unlike modern sports games which typically take a â€œbehind player oneâ€ view. The real fun here is multiplayer, because the game design was built to suit it. Playing against the computer can get frustrating quickly, because the CPU is almost always faster than you leaving you little chance for victory. Play calling is very simplistic as there are only four plays to choose from for each team leaving little difficulty is guessing what your opponent will likely do. All the basic rules of football are included, but there are no penalties and no fumbles. That means youâ€™ll have to put up with some minor (and sometimes major) sprite flicker. Single player or multiplayer modes play as you would expect, but the amount of action on-screen was a pretty heavy tax on the NES hardware. Tecmo Bowl offers 1 or 2 player modes, as well as a unique (at the time of release) mode called â€œcoachâ€ which allows you to select plays as the coach, and the CPU plays out the game for you. It may looks simplistic to a fault now, but that actually helps to set it apart in the modern world of complicated sports games, because anybody with the most basic understanding of American football can understand the gameplay presented here.
